Media's Eye

This piece is part of my sustained investigation for my AP Drawing class. I wanted to explore the media's idea of unattainable perfection and how it affects young girl's ideas of their own bodies. I began this piece with a wash of yellow watercolor across the whole paper, then filling in smaller spaces with specific colors. Next, I went in with colored pencils and added gradation and detail to every smaller section that I created in the watercolor stage. I wanted the flowers to appear vibrant and enticing to represent the joy that perfection must feel like and the yearn to have it. For the border, I made squares with opalescent watercolors and then drew on eyes and lines with a fine-line pen. I had to make many revisions to this piece throughout my process but I am very happy with the way it turned out.

Creativity means a lot to me and I would be nothing without it. It means to express yourself in a way that transcends rudimentary language and thought. When I draw or paint, I use creativity to make sense of my thoughts and express myself deeply.
