Brahms: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77

Michael O.

  • This concerto is one of my favorite works for violin. It is filled with so much emotion and depth that playing it feels like stepping into a wide, living landscape. While preparing this piece, I spent a lot of time balancing the technical challenges with the expressive side of the music. Brahms writes with both powerful and vulnerable moments, and I wanted to bring out that contrast: the bright, energetic passages and the more intimate, searching moments. My process included slow, careful practice for the technical aspect and to understand how each phrase fits into the whole piece, as well as run-throughs that let me rehearse the piece as a whole. In the end, my goal was to create a performance that honors the beauty of Brahms’s writing while also sharing my personal emotions with the listener.

  • Creativity is the ability to shape sound into meaning. As a violinist, it means discovering colors between the notes, finding new angles within familiar repertoire, and making each phrase feel alive in different ways.
