In Chinese culture, 紅包拿來, or “bring the red envelope,” is a joke made on occasions when it’s customary to give children money for good fortune. It rhymes with 恭喜發財, “wishing you prosperity.” We recite this phrase to our elders, pretending not to expect a red envelope in return. Even so, everyone knows that money is what many children are excited about, which prompts the joke: “I wish you prosperity, now can I have the money?” Though lighthearted, it hints at how children may be raised to value money above all else. As an Asian-American in Silicon Valley, money’s importance has always been emphasized. From a young age, we’re taught to save, invest, and study subjects that traditionally earn more instead of what we might prefer, like art. While the value of money is unquestionable, the pressure to prioritize it too much can feel suffocating.
