Bug House

Zoe L.

Watercolor paper, acrylic paint, oil pastel

  • In elementary school, my friends and I would create bug houses from sticks, rocks, and whatever other items we could find around the playground. There was a thrill to creating a miniature world and imagining the bugs inhabiting it leading lives parallel to our own. I wanted to capture the childlike wonder that blossomed during these moments by playing with perspective. In the piece, I´m represented by both the imaginary insect and the looming children above: as the insect, I´m living happily by making the most of what's around me, and as one of the children, I'm seven years old again, with a limitless imagination and the ability to turn anything into a spectacle. I find myself coming back to these memories often. They offer more than just nostalgia--they remind me the importance of staying grounded and finding joy in the mundane.

  • For me, creativity means exploring the ideas that make us who we are. Wether it’s by reflecting on childhood memories or expressing an integral part of my identity, creativity is the outlet that allows me to share my ideas and communicate what is important to me.
