  • My piece “Carousel” depicts my sister and I when we were 5 years old. I represent sisterhood through the metaphor of a carousel; although our relationship has highs and lows, like horses that rise and fall, we are eternally on the same ride. My sister and I are the sole human figures in the painting, because when I am with her, we only have to focus on each other, and I am encouraging the viewer to do the same. The third figure, the white horse, represents age. It is an omniscient force that follows us constantly, threatening to come between us, but our constant motion keeps us together. I painted the trees blurry to show movement, and simultaneously reinforcing the feeling of nostalgia in the piece.

  • Creativity allows me to transform my experiences and beliefs into something meaningful. Although people may interpret my art differently, the fact that it evokes a response at all is only possible using creativity. It enables me to create art that is both unique and inspired by everything in my life.
