Dear Wistful Girl,

Gabriela R.

Acrylic paint and oil pastel collaged on canvas

  • This piece depicts an image of myself at four years old. It is a representation of my upbringing with childlike elements and my perspective on an unsteady life where art could always gift me joy. I was inspired by surreal art and experimented with perspective, contrast, and texture. The butterflies collaged onto the canvas are taken from a drawing that I made in preschool on the back of a note I wrote to my mom. My younger self is balancing on a hand which symbolizes a higher power, it appears to be steady but there is no secure support which forces you to have hope. There are two snakes but the child is not afraid. This tells a story of optimism and fear. This painting is by far the most personal piece of art I have made and feels like a collaboration with my inner child.

  • Creativity means being able to express who you are, what you allow to define you, and is an opportunity to leave a positive, permanent impact on the world around you. Creativity is a universal language that can connect and move people without saying a word.
