Discarded Americana

Lev C.

gouache on paper

  • This diptych is part of a series of works I’ve made by leaning into observing minute detail and finding playfulness in everyday forgotten objects. I live in urban San Francisco, where I take the bus and walk on crowded, dirty sidewalks everyday. I find all-American wrappers and discarded items, and I intend to elevate them by making beautiful, realistic portraits of these imperfect, forgotten items. By putting them on solid backgrounds that are inspired by pop art style, I hope that they remind the viewer of the objects’ commercial origins. By calling attention to the design and materiality of everyday all-American objects, and how they affect our everyday lives, our moods, how we live, I uplift what we pay attention to and how America feels torn today.

  • Creativity means sharing my own perspective on our everyday world through choice of subject and materials. I hope that my personality, devotion to art technique, and love of color and detail comes across and inspires the viewer to take another look at the everyday world.
