This personal piece, created for my AP Art Portfolio class, was inspired by the tarot card, The Tower. The card represents personal transformation growth, and rebirth, which often emerge during times of challenge or upheaval. At first, I connected to the card playfully because of my height (6'4"), imagining myself as the tower it depicts. As I developed the piece, using my favorite art medium, pencil, it became a deeper reflection of my identity and heritage, with my Portuguese roots symbolized by the roosters, like the ones displayed at my avo's house when I was growing up. Now, as I prepare to move on from high school and into greater independence, O Torre, holds new meaning for me. It mirrors the uncertainty and excitement of this transition, reminding me that from struggle or change comes growth. In my work, I see myself full of energy, possibility, and growth.

For me, creativity has always been less about the technique and more about the freedom that comes with expressing ideas that can only be captured through visual mediums. Since I was old enough to hold a pencil, I’ve tried to capture the ways I see the world.
