Presence in Light

Leyi L.

  • In this painting, I explore the quiet drama of light and movement through the figure of a solitary cat. The sharp contrast between shadow and illumination became a way to capture a fleeting, almost cinematic moment. It shows the instant when the cat steps forward, alert and curious, as though sensing something just beyond the frame. I was drawn to the warm tones of its fur against the cool, abstracted background. I used textured brushstrokes to suggest both softness and tension. The scene is intentionally ambiguous: part observation, part memory. By allowing the darkness to remain undefined, I wanted the light to feel earned, as if the cat is walking toward clarity. Ultimately, this piece is about presence. Even a small, everyday creature can hold an entire moment of stillness and meaning.

  • Creativity means seeing beyond what’s in front of me. It’s the ability to turn a small moment—light, movement, emotion—into something that carries meaning. It helps me understand the world by reshaping it.
