Dreams of a Worm

Kaeyun T.

Acrylic Paint, Oil Pastel

  • Dreams illuminate youth, but do they hold up in the face of stark reality? This piece seeks to express fear of the future and comparison through the eyes of a worm. Deep below, the worm overcomes a rocky barrier only to look up and find the path marred by obstacles which grow more horrifying, even near outlandish, the higher they are. So how did the caterpillar get so far? So close to the friendly landscape that lights the way, colored hastily in oil pastel to convey the childlike quality of the dream. But that’s what it is, just a dream, soft wax strokes paling in contrast to the harsh acrylic surroundings. Bleak reds, piercing oranges. Gentle greens, offering shade and showing that maybe things will be all right, that reality isn’t as scary as it seems. And a golden pastel sun, a dream strong enough for the real world.

  • To me, creativity is the way one expresses to others how they interpret life and the world around them. Although being unique and innovative is often seen as being the heart of creativity, I would say authenticity to your own self is the most important part of it.
