Eye of the Beholder

Iris Y.

Acrylic paint, assorted fabrics on canvas board

  • This piece explores the idea of self consciousness, something I struggle with. When you're self conscious, it feels like people are staring and judging, waiting to just grab at your insecurities. I started by painting a close up portrait of my friend's eye in an alert expression. I used painting techniques like watering down the paint to get smooth realistic blending for the skin. I then experimented with cut outs of my hand made of assorted fabrics and arranged them around the eye to represent the fears I feel. With the hands “grabbing” at the eye, it depicts the fears in a physical sense, making it feel more personal and impactful.

  • Creativity stems from having problems, creativity arises when you need to think outside the box to problem solve. Creativity is how we evolve, how we grow. Without it, we'd be stuck living the same dull life. Creativity is what brings life to our world, it's what makes art art.
