Help Me, Prince

  • “Help Me, Prince” (幫幫我,王子), is a letter to my younger self who felt disconnected from her culture. The black box enveloping the girl’s head represents the suppression I felt as a child because my father hated the idea of me wearing “boyish” clothes. One day, a Chinese opera was playing on the TV. I was mesmerized by the androgynous actors in colorful costumes and makeup. There was a connection between the opera and I made me realize I can still be part of my culture while still being who I am. The person on the right is the grown up prince that I strived to become. Orange represents self expression and identity I wished my younger self could’ve experienced. I want to reach out to my younger self, tell her that she can wear whatever she wants, and be the prince who can help her.

  • Creativity means conveying opinions and emotions in an authentic way. Creativity conveys emotions in dense ways (ex/ metaphors) rather than directly saying said opinion/message.
