Intertidal Jade

  • Hidden among tidepool eelgrass, the Fluffy Sculpin (Oligocottus snyderi) reveals itself only to those patient enough to look closely. This two-inch, neon-green fish blends perfectly into undulating seagrass blades. Its head and body are covered in cirri: tiny tassel-like appendages that mimic algae and make it look “fluffy.” To survive in the rough intertidal zone, this species has evolved many adaptations including the loss of scales, allowing it to absorb dissolved oxygen through its skin. I photographed this individual during a negative low tide, gently collecting it with a dip net and placing it in a black-background photo tank. This method isolates the fish from its habitat, highlighting intricate details otherwise lost in the tidepools. After taking some quick shots and releasing it back into the eelgrass, I spent two days editing the image in Lightroom. The final result highlights unique body features that reflect its lifestyle, adaptations, and taxonomy.

  • Creativity goes hand in hand with curiosity and experience. When you learn a lot about something and experiment with different materials and techniques to create something unique, that is your creativity. Creativity can be applied to everything; it can be used to empower, learn, educate others, spread important messages, etc.
