lunch in a school cafeteria; mm.dd.18

These two poems both relate to my culture and where I'm from. "lunch in a school cafeteria" is a work that describes the feeling of not belonging when bringing home-packed lunches to school. It's hard to love a food which is so foreign to others. Yet at the end of the day, no one can change where they're from, so we might as well embrace it. "mm.dd.18" is a piece written in memory of my grandfather. I was only eight at the time, and didn't remember much. Not the date, that's for sure, but I'll always remember playing games of Chinese chess with him. He taught me the ways of the ancient game, and it has always been a constant reminder of who I am. Chinese chess has become more than a game to me. It's a symbol of the people who helped me become the person I am today.

Creativity is an outlet— a place where people can express themselves in their own way. In the world of poetry, I feel safe. There's no right or wrong, just full creative freedom. Creativity in poetry is more than the black and white words on the page. It's what lies beyond.
