Metamorphosis

Luna W.

Colored pencils, paint markers, highlighter, felt-tip pen

  • This self-portrait is supposed to represent my fear of change (metathesiophobia). The moth symbolizes transformation, showing that making that change, going through metamorphosis, in a way, can often make you a better person than before. My expression is supposed to be hesitant, with my head slightly tilted down in uncertainty. During the process of making it, I probably ended up having to redraw the final face 10 times because it just didn’t look right. I actually had to switch to a different reference before I finally got it to look right. In the process of coloring it, I had been nervous about how the piece may turn out, and I ended up taking a chance and using this teal highlighter as a base. After going back over it with colored pencils, I found that it had the desired effect, and I was satisfied.

  • As humans, creativity is essential. We wouldn't have gotten nearly this far without being creative and resourceful. Personally, I may not actually depend on my art to live, but I do find that it helps me live a more enjoyable life than without it.
