Monster Under the Bed

This piece reimagines the familiar childhood fear of the “monster under the bed” as a symbol of how our understanding of fear changes as we grow up. Instead of portraying the monster as a threat, I depict both the human figure and the creature as equally afraid. The walls surrounding them carry fragmented images and phrases representing the real-world heavier truths and fears people encounter with age. The monster, once the embodiment of imaginary childhood fear, now mirrors the human’s reaction — suggesting that even the things we once feared lose their power in the face of reality. By letting the monster “grow up” alongside the child, the piece explores how innocence shifts when confronted with the world’s darker sides, and how fear becomes something more complex than what hides in the shadows.
