Mosaic Bust

Matthew M.

Stoneware, glaze, underglaze

  • This self-portrait bust explores the tension between protection and vulnerability. The “armor” on the exterior represents how I balance my introverted and extroverted sides, while the scale of the work challenged me to move beyond my comfort zone of wheel-thrown forms into large-scale figurative sculpture.

  • Creativity, to me, is the ability to notice something overlooked and turn it into something worth looking at. It’s a way of understanding myself and connecting with others by giving form to ideas that can’t be expressed with words.
