I've made many self-portraits before, but most were under prompts and were more literal than abstract. I wanted to express vulnerability, but I was stuck with the mentality of thinking I was seeking attention and "victimizing" myself by being too vulnerable. The dress and wings are melting and almost water-like, inspired by the story of Icarus. Depicting myself with negative traits can feel self-deprecating and like l'm looking for pity. I didn't make the portrait as something to be pitied for, rather I made it to depict myself in the most authentic way I could. Being true to myself helps me feel more comfortable recognizing my good and bad traits and blocks me from the idea that l'm this "perfect" person.

To me, creativity is simply doing what makes you happy. Creativity is the ability to move in new directions and express oneself without the fear of rejection or judgment. We often barricade ourselves within the walls of expectations, and true creativity is standing up to break those walls down.
