My Celebration

Jasmine G.

Canvas, acrylic paint, red envelope

  • As an American-born Chinese, there were times that I felt distant from my cultural community. Still, the traditions are what kept me connected and feeling a sense of belonging with my heritage. Beside the traditional dress worn during New Year, I painted chopsticks with real red envelopes pasted on, representing family meals and red envelope exchanges. On top of the mahjong tiles are common Chinese candies. Candy is often put out for prosperity during the New Year. Mahjong tiles are a symbol of togetherness as people spend hours playing with friends/family. I used saturated colors to convey the liveliness of celebrations and complementary colors (red or green) in each object and triangular composition to create a sense of unity.

  • Creativity is my chance to recognize all the different ways of visually communicating an idea. Through using my creativity in art, I learned that not only does the subject of the art send a message to the viewer but also the colors, arrangement, materials, and processes to create it.
