• Artist Statement

  Richard Gaines is the founder of Returning Citizen Association, a CEO, and an author. Ricky was affected by the justice system as a teenager but he turned his life around after being released from a 24 year prison sentence. Richard's days in prison consisted of writing, mentoring others, and most importantly discovering the prison library. I chose this pose because it shows his quiet strength and professionalism. The flowers in the background represent strength and renewal. I chose bright and dark colors like blue, orange, pink, purple, and yellow representing different emotions and feelings like wisdom, enthusiasm, hope, and ambition. Through his portrait and quotes you can see how far he got and how he created his own community by working hard. I want others to understand that everything takes time, if you set your mind to it with consistency you can create something as large as your own company.
