• Artist Statement

  In this piece I aimed for the darkness and light to equally share prominence throughout the portrait. The feelings of despair and adversity present in his shadows still coexist with even the brightest highlights. These feelings are not being concealed, as the contrast between the hues are vivid. His facial expression depicts a man accepting his grief, leaving him stuck in the space between happiness and sorrow. Between the decision of accepting the bad while being grateful for the good. I wanted to convey this by incorporating a bright orange undertone that can stay present despite the vast darkness. Throughout the painting there are rays of light peeking out and radiating amidst all the shadows, representing the hope in times of pain. This painting is a representation of the conflict I faced in coming to terms with the circumstances in my life while also welcoming the possibilities of the future.
