patchwork, It's what's on the inside that counts

These pieces address some of the nuanced emotions that come with my identity as nonbinary and transgender. I want to capture the complexity of the frustration but also empowerment that results from being transgender, in my personal experience. I use a theme of angels and religion paired with anatomy to illustrate my emotions surrounding gender expression. Religion is typically used as reasoning to oppose queer and genderqueer identities, which was why I chose it as the focus in patchwork. Meanwhile, the bodily imagery in It’s what’s on the inside that counts accounts for the gender dysphoria that’s always in the back of my mind. I hope with these works I’m able to express the struggles me and many other genderqueer folks face throughout our lives. To those who have experienced similar emotions, I hope you know that you’re not alone.

Creativity is to be human. It's what lends us our morality, our judgement, and our individuality. It's essential because it keeps us alive by giving us inspiration. It means taking our surroundings and using it to create for the sake of creating.
