Piano Practice

For as long as I can remember, my great-grandmother’s piano has rested just outside my bedroom door. The oak spinet, nicknamed the “Queen Anne” after her, has been handed down through four generations and traveled through multiple homes, eventually making its way from my grandparents’ home in Calgary to my family’s in San Francisco. Though I detested my piano lessons from a young age, refusing to practice and sighing deeply at the sound of my piano teacher at the door, my younger sister has a talent for it. Due to its resting place ten feet from my bedroom door, I am a delighted victim of my sister's practice times. She started as a plunky seven-year-old but quickly blossomed into a straight-backed, well-pitched piano player. As The Queen Anne is sadly on her last legs, I wanted to capture her and my sister in their harmonious element.

As I practice photography, I’ve begun to see the world as a living picture, where the smallest details play an essential role in creating the larger scene. Those scenes can also go unnoticed, so I love the job of trying to capture them.
