Polarized

Melody G.

Water-mixable oil paint

  • This was one of my first oil paintings, and my first experiment with abstract color palettes. In my previous ten years of art experience, I had only ever tried to replicate portraits or images as faithfully and realistically as possible. However, as I grew up and began to develop a definitive worldview of my own, I wanted to create art with more of my own ideas and viewpoints. This work emerged from a stressful and turbulent political climate during the beginning of the year, which drew me to try and portray the country’s increasing extremism and divisions in my painting. As the subject, Ronald Reagan, was a polarizing figure, and because the color palette consists of clashing colors that resemble vibrant polarized light, I chose to name the piece “Polarized.”

  • Creativity is the magical ability, inherent in all humans, to look at any simple aspect of the world and find something more in it. Our imagination is limitless -- so having creativity means that you can always find some way to believe that the world around you is worth living in.
