Pond of Nostalgia

Delaina H.

Watercolor, one paintbrush

  • This cherished piece stems from my deep fascination in koi fishponds, all the way from my childhood. As a kid, I‘d visit a variety of different koi fishponds. So, when I was given a final project, I knew I needed to combine every pond I visited. My process was listening to the sounds of water rushing, as I painted with my art teacher's watercolor palette and brush. I chose bright and nostalgic colors, instead of calmer tones because I wanted to convey my whimsical and bright nature as a kid. Each fish is a fish I've seen back then, and I avoided small shapes of my pond to convey a ripple effect in the water. As for the lilypads, I layered on copious amounts of green to thicken each of them, and added a pop of pink to convey love. Altogether, it’s a loved memento to who I was before.

  • Creativity is the culmination of a work, crafted by any individual when confident or supported. But to me, it means spontaneity, rushing at the heat of the moment without a process and forming it. It's unique to every individual, and it personally progresses with me through every challenge and success.
