Reinterpretation of "Toilette"

“Reinterpretation of 'Toilette” is my modern spin on James Jules Rougeron’s 1877 painting, "Toilette". The original work shows a noblewoman smiling at her reflection as she ties a bonnet on her head. Even though his work was made over a century ago, the intimate moment of getting ready and the confidence that comes with it is something meaningful that resonates with me today, especially as someone who loves to go out with my friends. I recreated the scene using oil pastels and colored pencils instead of oil paint for softer textures and bolder strokes. I made the colors more vibrant and saturated than the original to emphasize the energy and feelings of excitement that come with preparation. By shifting mediums and palette, I attempted to bridge the past and present. Additionally, I aimed to illustrate how timeless experiences can be reimagined through modern eyes, while still honoring the original artwork.

Creativity is the freedom to express who you are, while also inviting others to find their own meaning in your work. It’s two sides of the same coin: the internal freedom to think differently, and the external freedom to let those ideas be reinterpreted, reshaped, and understood.
