acrylic paint on canvas

  • Being only my second painting since elementary school, I went into it with very little experience. This is a recreation of a pencil-and-paper artwork which was made during a quite dark time in my life. Marked by constant overstimulation and stress, I felt like I needed Somewhere to escape to. And so Heren’t (“Here not”: a place other than Here) was born into my mind. A conceptual space of my own imagination. Whenever I couldn’t process all the noise and senses around me, I would imagine myself There, where there is no noise or restless stimulation. It does, of course, get lonely so deep in an abyss, so I would start bringing my phone in There with me. I wrote a poem about Heren’t, in which I would describe it as “an immutable stagnant void” with “a faultless comatose non-existence” and a touch of “tranquil arrant silence.”

  • Creativity isn't a way of thinking, but a lack of guidelines for thinking. Creativity can be how you express yourself; your identity. We use it as a tool to explain who we are. Creativity is that which we use to defy the expectations of ourselves and others.
