Remembrance in Death

  • I explored symbols of death, and remembering and honoring those who have died through this piece. It is inspired by my Vietnamese đám giỗ traditions of burning money on the day of family member’s death to bring them good fortune in the afterlife, as well as dia de muertos skeletal face paint and marigolds. I combined the Mexican symbols, and flames from Vietnamese culture to show the uncontrollability and inevitability of death. We honor those who have gone until it is our turn. The top edge was set on fire as my way of releasing control. Death is often a hushed topic, it’s the end point of life. I see death as something to be respected, and that we should remember and celebrate those who are gone before we join them.

  • Creativity is finding an beautiful answer to a question. Philosophical questions about life, or questions on how to construct something, creative people can find solutions. Skill comes with time, but being able to find new solutions and imagine a beautiful ways to execute ideas and improve ourselves and others.
