Resonance

  • This photo is of a cello bridge, the wooden piece that holds the strings. I was inspired to take this photo after practicing. I was in my living room; it was late afternoon. I had just put rosin on my bow, which creates dust on the bridge. When I was about to pack up my cello, rays of sun cast shadows on the dust of the rosin, creating an unexpected texture. The rays of sun reminded me of photos of sunsets on the moon, where the lack of atmosphere creates similar long, sharp shadows. I quickly snapped a photo with my phone, keeping the idea for later. That night, long after the sun had set, I sought to create a better version of the photo. It didn’t take much, only a phone flashlight and a better camera, to capture the magic of the cello.

  • Creativity is the ability to recognize beauty and capture it. The moment when the sun hit my cello’s bridge has probably happened to many people. But it takes creativity to recognize the beauty of it, and use a camera to capture the atmosphere of the moment.
