Rust and Renewal

Christian S.

Charcoal, colored pencils

  • This artwork emphasizes the difference between nature and machinery. Grey gears at various levels of development represent the monotonous repitition of a machine world. Whereas the nature (vine, buterflys, etc) are shown to be in stark contrast to a bland world. While they are being slowly replaced, they are notably overgrowing the gears/chains and fighting against industrialization. Additionally, the orange butterfly in the front has emerged from its cocoon, and is patiently waiting for its wings to be able to fly. This butterfly is a symbol of the renewal of the natural world and how beauty can be found amongst the grey.

  • Creativity is both expressed via physical means (mediums used, level of artistic rendering/development, composition) and also from an internal place (the symbolic values of certain objects, metaphors, storytelling).
