Soul Sick Until May

As the days shorten and winter settles in, this portfolio captures the specific blend of trepidation, nostalgia, and desperation that defines the teenage experience. These two poems serve as partners in reflecting the youths’ often overexcited and fruitless search for answers through visceral imagery of the natural world, whether it be frigid temperatures or unyielding ocean tides. While “Caught by the Cold” is inspired by seasonal depression and embodies the action of shivering within its line breaks, it can be read more vaguely as representing the lack of caution youth employ as a result of not yet understanding long-term consequences. It is meant to also evoke the nostalgia of careless joy. Comparatively, “Swept Away” questions the permanence of legacy in our fast-paced world. It’s both an apology to all those forgotten and a hesitant love letter to closure, asking what remains when the tide finally pulls back.

Pursuing both writing and engineering, creativity means distilling original, abstract intentions into a language others can feel. I want to hone this ability to improve the quality of life by creating life-changing innovations and teaching the subtleties of empathy and introspection.
