haikus for childhood

Joanne Z.

  • The essence of a haiku is not a 5-7-5 syllable count, but the emotion conveyed through a brief image, often with a two-part structure and a seasonal reference. Here, this piece contains multiple that come together to create nostalgia for everyday moments of childhood. All four seasons are thrown together nonlinearally like a rush of memories. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude when I focus on observing the incredibly mundane—in human moments as well as nature. In this case, I capture these moments by distilling them into the subtlest, briefest form of poem.

  • Creativity is trying different things, combining methods, experimenting with form. It's doing something you haven't done before, whether or not you're the first. It's taking observations from the world, others' ideas, and synthesizing them---turning that input into something that may not be original, but is wholly your own.
