2020, the year when many people felt lost, afraid, isolated—yet for me, it was the opposite. My classmates and I continued attending school during the lockdown, something I’m still grateful for. Because of that, I wasn’t fully aware of the effects COVID had on the rest of the world until I transferred to a public school in sixth grade. Sadly, toward the end of that year, a peer took her life. I couldn’t grasp that fact. In 2022, the suicide rate for children my age was 2.36 deaths per 100,000 people. Still, it wasn’t until after the murder of my uncle that the personal door to death truly opened for me. Over time, these emotions churned in my 14-year-old mind, and one day I finally sat down and wrote. In merely twenty minutes, four years of my life poured onto a page—becoming the foundation for this artwork.

To me, creativity means expressing what matters most through the authenticity of our own hands. We all experience the world through a personal lens. Whether it's writing, photography, music, design, dance, or any other outlet, it allows everyone to express the things we hold close to our sense of self.
