The Butterfly Lovers

Inspired by the legendary Chinese folktale The Butterfly Lovers (often called China's "Romeo and Juliet"), this performance reflects my cultural identity and genuine passion for piano. As one of the most widely recognized stories in Chinese culture, its themes of forbidden love and sacrifice carry deep cross-generational meaning. The story follows two lovers separated by societal expectations, who ultimately reunite as butterflies, symbolizing eternal love and freedom. In my recital, I performed a personal arrangement of this piece, shortening and restructuring sections while adding expressive transitions to heighten the emotional arc for live performance. Through dynamic contrast, tone, and phrasing, I challenged myself to become a storyteller without words, manifesting the story’s tenderness and tragedy through every note I played. Performing this work with an audience familiar with its cultural roots created a powerful sense of community, uniting the performer and audience with a shared tradition.

Creativity, to me, is the freedom to think differently and turn ideas into opportunity. It is the ability to problem-solve through expressive and imaginative approaches that open limitless potential. A personal skill shaped by individuality, taking varying forms for everyone and allowing everyone to create meaning in a unique way.
