The Last Hen

The Last Hen is based on the experiences my grandparents had during the Cultural Revolution in China, where people were extremely poor, hungry, and oppressed. It encompasses the tough emotions a young girl goes through as her parents are being taken away by the Red Guards, punished for owning a hen. That hen was their only source of food and the last glimmer of hope her family had before surrendering to the government. The Last Hen is more than just an animal, it is a symbol of humanity surviving beneath a ruthless dictatorship, as the nation is consumed by control.

Creativity means the freedom in self-expression. It calls for using our eyes to discover the world, our pens to express emotion, and our hearts to sympathize with the experiences’ of others. Creativity is like going on a road that is not taken, there are infinite possibilities and no wrong answer.
