Three Poems

Helen G.

  • This series of poems embodies the dreamlike nature of time, existence, and memory. The pieces in this portfolio are deliberately surreal and image-heavy, conveying the essence of existence in all its absurdity. Though each piece is different in theme, they all dance around the ultimately unanswerable question of what it means to be alive. I was inspired by surrealist literature and art, stream-of-consciousness styles employed by writers like Virginia Woolf, and existentialist philosophy. Seemingly arbitrary images weave together to express a central idea, and these pieces cohere into a dreamlike yet lucid sequence. At the end, a definitive question is never answered; however, I hope to leave readers with a sense of catharsis. At once personal and detached, I hope to unleash immensely vulnerable musings into a larger web of existence.

  • Creativity is a state of being. Existence is itself a state of creation and thus I create by being. I write to express such a state of being and to experience lives apart from my own.
