Where I'm from/Imposter Syndrome

Sophie T.

  • The process of writing my “Where I’m From” poem, I had to confront my insecurities about my racial identity. Coming from an immigrant family, I often feel the cultural divide between my generation and my elders. My parents and grandparents have different values and ways of doing things compared with me, someone raised in the California system. Whenever I return to Vietnam, I see how differently we view what is important or sacred. In my poem, I reference the Buddhist and Catholic altars that represent the two sides of my family. Growing up with both religions felt like living in a cultural mash-up. The ancient Lemon Tree symbolizes the mix of roots that nourish me in America while still carrying influences from Northern and Southern Vietnam. I also reference dishes like backyard oysters and Canh Rau Đay, reminders of the heritage that shaped me into the person I am today.

  • Creativity means the ability to create something that has never been done before, to express myself in intricate and beautiful words.
