Wicked Lobsta (Luminary)

Tommy W.

Stoneware clay, low fire glazes, slab built

  • This piece was inspired by my interest in the lobstering culture on the East Coast. When visiting family in New Hampshire and Rhode Island, I’ve always been drawn to the working boats in the harbors. Whether it was returning with their daily catches or loading up for a trip, each boat seemed to have a fascinating story to tell. I wanted to create a traditional lobster boat that reflects my connection and shows my love for the East Coast. Tasked with making a luminary, I researched different boat designs and built a ceramic version, paying extra attention to the windows and roof. I added port holes to my lit-up hull, giving my piece more life. I added the name Wicked Lobsta to further bring out a New England style, giving the piece a personal twist. The piece is meant to capture the charm of the boats I grew up admiring.

  • Creativity is the ability to express parts of my identity without words and without being influenced by others. I used to think creativity only showed up physically, like in skateboarding or surfing, but now I see it can exist in many forms. It's a true expression of authenticity.
