Armored

Aspen C.

oil on canvas

  • My goal with this piece was to create a self portrait. I wanted to paint the truest form of myself, but I couldn’t think of a creative and original way to do so. After days of thought into this artwork, I finally found how to place my soul into canvas. I’ve been a guarded person for years. Since I can remember, I’ve never let another into my mind. As self preserving as this method of living can be, it became extremely lonely after so long. Now, being almost 18 with close to 5 years of this practice, I’ve finally been working to alleviate this armored thinking and allow myself to feel vulnerable with others. I wanted to show this through the tense posture, defensive positioning of the sword, and the soft and nervous look on the face. My painting is meant to show the complexity of self preservation.

  • Since childhood, creativity has been a staple in my life. To me, creativity is a necessity. It brings life to dull spaces and individuality to all. Creativity, and how we express it, is what makes us all unique in our thinking. It's what makes us individuals.
