I visited China with my Dad in 2024. While I was there, feeling very foreign, I also felt oddly comforted as my Dad described his childhood while we walked through the streets. One of the most memorable moments of the trip was when my Dad bought me to see the Hutongs in the city Beijing. These traditional buildings are characterized by their small, winding alleyways and their courtyards. For lunch, we headed to a restaurant tucked deep in the maze, where he and his middle school friends enjoyed a meal with cigarettes and drinks. There is something very special and valuable about the bond of people, food, and culture, something I can’t quite put into words, that made me feel at home 10,000 miles away. I based my piece off the scenery around this restaurant, where I sat outside when the room got too smoky for my eyeballs.
