Breaking Free

  • Breaking Free expresses not being able to reach your goals because of setbacks or being physically restricted. Wanting to reach the light but not being able to can be frustrating, stressful, and painful, which pulls you towards the darkness. I decided to depict a person with wings because I think they reflect someone who is dealing with/has dealt with a physical restraint. They look angelic and delicate but they are strong, powerful and capable of so much more. The wings are the light in your body and maybe the motivation to try again. My piece was originally created for a friend who was making a website for connecting people with mental health conditions, so it was meant to express more mental and emotional setbacks. Either way one decides to interpret it, I am proud of what I have created and hope to challenge myself more with painting deeper ideas.

  • Creativity allows me to express myself in a way that I cannot through words. Expressing my feelings through art, although it can be tough, ultimately lets me work through the emotion in the form of my creativity. It lets me be free in ways other things do not.
