Children Deserve Fun Not Funerals

  • “Children Deserve Fun Not Funerals” was directly inspired by Keith Haring’s art pieces and advocacy. His distinctive style and clear messages motivated me to advocate for the livelihood of Palestinian children. The piece contains two figures holding up a watermelon, a symbol widely used in social media to show solidarity with the Palestinian people as it contains the colors of the Palestinian flag. Additionally, in the background I incorporated the pattern of a keffiyeh, which symbolizes solidarity and freedom for the Palestinian people. Beyond this, the fishnet-like design represents the Palestinians’ ties to the Mediterranean Sea, and the curvy lines resemble olive trees, a major point of pride for Palestinians. I wanted to create this piece to raise awareness about the Palestinian struggle for freedom in my community.

  • Creativity means expressing my ideas even if they are not coherent. Creativity is about creating something that expresses what words sometimes cannot. It’s about creating something that people are able to understand and be challenged by. Beyond this, creativity is about having fun and respecting the untidiness of concepts.
