Dia de los Vivos

  • I chose to imitate several parts from my mentor poem, Dinosaurs in the Hood by Danez Smith. I used the idea of stereotypes and flipped the “typical” protagonist into one that is reflective of a community, previously depicted as antagonists in the media. I imitated the original poem’s description of the first scene, and made it into my own version of how I want the “cholo” to be portrayed as the hero. In Smith’s poem, they used a simpler and more innocent scene to begin the poem, but I used this as inspiration to create a scene that is both relatable and rare. I also used Smith’s idea of combining elements of different movies to create an original piece, free from the common clíches found in media. I believe by combining these opposing movies we can create creative and unconventional scenes, never seen in the media, and form new narratives.

  • I believe creativity is the ability to generate a work that is both authentically meaningful to yourself and sparks inspiration within others. For me, I find creativity to be both challenging and rewarding in the ways that it pushes you thoughtfully engage with the world.
