"Ishane Koti Suriya Prakashane" is a Carnatic music composition by Muthu Thandavar in the ragam Nalinakanti and is set to Adi Thalam. The beginning of the work I submitted involves around 30 seconds of improvised, free-form singing within the bounds of the ragam. To compose it, I used the song itself as inspiration to find melodic patterns that I felt would suit this improvised section (which is called an Alapana in Carnatic music). The actual song itself, while a rendition of a previously created piece, involved a meticulous preparation process due to the number of runs (gamakas) it contains, which required a lot of practice.

To me, creativity is when you go beyond any limits you feel confined within by expressing yourself authentically using artistic techniques. In music, this means experimenting with various rhythmic and melodic patterns with my own touch, mixing technical training with my personal aesthetic.
