"Memory Lane" for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra

Alexander Y.

  • In Spring 2025, I struggled at the thought of losing touch with my closest friends graduating in June and losing my favorite band director to district layoffs. However, the memories I made with these people gave me hope, since memories keep us connected through the different stages of our lives. I took this idea and wove it into a saxophone concerto, which I dedicated to my classical saxophonist band teacher, who plays classical saxophone. The piece’s first theme starts anxiously with alternating major/minor chords of the tonic, but extends to a longer nostalgic melody. The second theme, illustrating hope, has more movement and builds up to a grand orchestral tutti, which then winds back down to the first melody. The reprise of the first theme and a conclusion mirroring the opening measures symbolize the power of memories to transcend physical distances and bring people back together to a common ground.

  • Creativity, in itself, gives me the opportunity to express my ideas and emotions in a unique way. However, creativity also has the ability to bring people together. My compositions allow me to connect people of different backgrounds to me and between each other through the common language of music.
