Ocean Bloom

Anoushka K.

Charcoal, blending stump, and pencil on mixed media paper

  • I created this artwork as part of a series of ocean based drawings, where each drawing explores an aspect of our world. I have always been fascinated by jellyfish, they are among the most ethereal beings I have ever seen. In my drawing I wanted to attempt to capture the timelessness of a jellyfish's movement: my drawing has less meaning behind the type of jellyfish, and more meaning behind the medium and movement of the jellyfish. I chose to utilize charcoal for this project because I have found that when I draw in charcoal, the subject is always drawn in the most unbiased way possible. The black and white leaves a lot up to the interpretation of the viewer, while the jellyfish goes off the edge of the page to create a sense of endlessness and mystify the viewer.

  • Creativity means to me seeing the potential in something which may not make sense at first glance, and trying to capture that potential or feeling in art. Creativity means to me following and creating what feels good to create rather then what looks good.
