Perfection Hurts

Emma Q.

  • As ballet dancers, we have been reaching for perfection our whole lives. This piece explores that very idea and learning to find the joy in personal growth and connection with others, rather than obsessing over trying to fit a stereotype. To convey these emotions, we used contemporary technique as a way to juxtapose the strictness of ballet training with the freedom found in self-improvement and shared understanding. The choreography highlights moments of struggle, overcoming, relationships, and support of one another to show how getting out of your head can lead to so much more than staying isolated in your own belittling thoughts. At its core, Perfection Hurts tells the story of our journey as ballet dancers as we balance our struggles with unrealistic ideals and learning how to find joy in the connections we build.

  • Creativity is allowing your imagination to take over and guide your thoughts and inquiries. Often, we don't have the words to convey the vast amount of emotions we feel. Expressing our creativity through movement has become our way of outwardly letting go of the words we can't seem to vocalize.
