Pieces of Me

Rochelle C.

Acrylic paint, puzzle pieces

  • This piece depicts a girl eating puzzle piece cereal while her identity fades away in the background. The puzzle pieces represent the whiter skin that is desired in East Asian cultures and how people constantly reshapes themselves to meet the expectations of others . As she fades in the background, the piece highlights how wanting to be accepted can slowly erase one’s sense of self. In particular, the work reflects the tension between one’s true identity and conformity, especially in the context of Asian beauty standards and skin tone lightening. The work explores how striving for acceptance within these eurocentric standards can distance individuals from their true self.

  • Creativity is expressing myself in ways that my words cannot. I like experimenting with different kinds of mediums to convey my message.
