Rachmaninoff Prelude In G Minor

The most interesting part of playing the piece was phrasing, especially of the middle section. When beginning to learn the phrasing, I tried copying Lugansky's interpretation, but it became obvious that that would not work; I'm not him. In the middle section, I decided to taper the volume slightly before the highest point with the goal of creating a limited feeling, as though one "gave up" instead of reaching out with all one had. For the rest of the piece, I focused on the contrast between the strong beats and the short, decorative elements around them and tried make a millitary, march-like feeling. Although I didn't reach my technical goal and had some mistakes still, I'm satisfied with how the idea came out.

To me, it means to use and combine ideas in a way that is unique to one's experience and self.
