Reflets dans l'eau, L. 110 no. 1 from Images book 1

Gabrielle K.

  • If life had to be a musical work, mine would be an impressionistic one, like Debussy’s Reflets dans l’eau. Debussy “broke” the standard compositional rules to portray flowing water. This piece also resembles my life. Each new harmony added mirrors the experiences and knowledge I gain daily. However, their unclear direction mimics how my future is uncertain rather than a clear picture. Additionally, the contrasting elements align with the variety in life. The soft, running notes feel free, like a true expression of myself breaking from routine, while the loud, bold chords shout confidence. Nevertheless, this work contained difficulties. The uneven running notes resemble life’s hardships, while playing too loudly and struggling with incorrect memorization echoed focusing on unimportant things. Regardless, mastering this composition was worth the time and effort. It is one of my favorites and taught me that success does not require perfection or conforming to society’s standards.

  • Creativity is an expression of oneself outside of the typical ways people express themselves. I enjoy using it to serve others. A way I often use creativity is serving on the contemporary worship team. The notes are not fully written out, so I have to improvise on what to play.
